This week we have started to learn about fractions of shapes. We have found a half, a third and a quarter of a shape. We even started to look at finding 3/4 of a shape. We have been using lots of new vocabulary about fractions, including ‘denominator’ and ‘numerator.’
We have all been chanting that a fraction is ‘an equal part of a whole’. We should all know the definition very well by now!
Tasks:
Draw a square and cut it out. Split it in half by drawing a line so that you have two equal parts. Colour one half in one colour, and the other half in a different colour.
Label each side of your circle as 1/2. Could you draw the line somewhere else and still have 1/2 of a square? Why?
Draw a circle and cut it out. Fold your circle in half, and then half again. You will now have quarters. Label each quarter as 1/4.
Explain to your adult what the different numbers in your fraction represent. Which number is the numerator? Which number is the denominator? What do they mean?
Can you tell your adult which fraction is equivalent to 2/4? Remember, equivalent means the same as.
