The Camden Reading Competition
Article Written by Sonny Hogan (Eagles Y5/6)
On Thursday 22nd June, Abbie (Yr4), Teliyah (Yr4), Layla (Yr5), Max (Yr5), Alex, (Yr6) and Sonny (Yr6) travelled to Edith Neville School via bus to partake in The Camden Reading Competition, organised by The Hall School. These six children were the winners and runners up of an intensive competition at school.
When the children arrived, the competition started. The underdogs were outnumbered by the other schools (Edith Neville, Christ Church and Richard Compton) who each had six readers, as opposed to the Rosary’s ‘Golden Three.’ The first Rosary Reader was Teliyah with her outstanding performance of a passage from Ice Palace, by Robert Swindells. Up next was Layla, with a melancholic piece from Refugee Boy, written by Benjamin Zephaniah. And last but not least, our third and final Rosary Reader was Sonny with an exceptional extract from one of his favourite books: The Midnight Guardians, by Ross Montgomery.
As the judges added up scores, the room was dense with tension, so thick you could cut it with a butter knife: “And for the Year Four first place, it’s Teliyah!…For our Year Five first place, this goes to Layla! And with a joint first for Year 6, it’s Sonny with The Midnight Guardians!”
Later came the big announcement: “For the best overall school, the cup will be awarded to……. The Rosary!” Every Rosary child jumped for joy due to their victory. They left the school showing off their shiny, silver trophy, the first one in a while. Well done everybody!
