Last Thursday our Year 5/6 Football teams played down at Coram Fields in a Camden wide competition. Expectations were high after a terrific series during the Winter and both teams didn’t disappoint.

The Girls team started very strong winning their first 2 matches as Aimee, Princess and Lacey led from the front with their blistering attacks on goal.  Unfortunately they were narrowly beaten in the final 2 matches despite the enormous efforts of  Sinead, Sara, Maddison and Jehovani defending the goal mouth. As a result they were marginally edged out of the finals and were unable to progress into the next round.  The Girls team should be extremely proud of their efforts and take great pride in their season. Their perseverance and hard work to gel together as a team was their greatest achievement this year.

The Boys team started the day of in fine fashion cruising through the first round convincingly winning their first 3 matches and drawing their 3rd. Charles was absolutely outstanding up front, proving to be lethal in front of goals. Sean and Ivan also worked tirelessly in defence ensuring the opposition earned each and every possession.  As a result the boys automatically progressed through to the Finals and were set to face Brookfield in the first Semi-Final.

Ezekiel and Danny starred in a very tight Semi-Final; Brookfield were clearly tired and were stagnant as our boys tirelessly attacked from the front half. Archie M and Oliver were solid in defence and controlled the play throughout the proceeding. However, it took a composed strike in the dying minutes from Ezekiel to secure a Grand Final berth against St Aloysius.

The Grand Final was again played in the same fashion as nerves from both teams were high. The play- reminiscent of a pinball machine- switched back and forth depriving both teams of any clear momentum. As the final whistle blew the scores were locked at 0-0. The Boys re-grouped and went back into the second half full of confidence, however it was not to be. A few small errors cost our team and St Aloysius scored the luckiest of goals from an unfortunate deflection. It was a bitterly disappointing defeat seeing as we had previously beat St Aloysius 4-0 in the opening match. Despite this, the Boys held their heads high and handled the defeat like true professionals- their maturity should be applauded.

Congratulations to all the boys, you should be extremely proud of your silver medals and hard work this year.

Special mention also goes to ‘Coach Lachie’ who kindly came and led the Girls team throughout the day.

Well done to all involved!
