After a morning of snow, we visited The Charles Dickens’ Museum which was decorated for Christmas! We started in his old nursery and learnt about how it was dangerous for children in Victorian times. We smelt Victorian London from a jar!

We then travelled around the museum and looked at the different rooms. We learnt about how Charles Dickens would’ve lived and how the Victorians’ lives differed to ours. We held a Victorian water bottle and looked at opera glasses (similar to binoculars). We learnt that Victorians love Christmas! They used real candles on their Christmas tree – we are more fire safety conscious today!

We even visited the room where Charles Dickens wrote ‘Oliver Twist!’ We saw a ruler which was in the shape of an octagon! We smelt tallow and beeswax candles and visited the washroom. In the kitchen, we looked at different types of irons.

It was wonderful trip that taught us about Charles Dickens and really got us in the mood for Christmas!
