STEAM Week: Day 1 (Earth Day) – The History, Journey and Impact of Plastic
Today we learnt about the history of plastic, it’s journey to waterways and landfill and its impact on the environment, animals and people!
Here are a couple things we found especially interesting:
- Microplastics get covered in algae in water after just 2 days so sea animals think they are food!
- Humans ingest a credit card size worth of plastic in 1 week, 3 plastic pens worth in a month and 2 iphone’s worth in a year!!!!
We did a plastic hunt around our classrooms and discussed why they are made of plastic and what the alternatives could be, an experiment with water filled bottles and at the end reflected on how we feel about our world’s plastic problem and came up with initial ideas for what we can do about it!
