Today it was Victorian Day in school!

We all got into the role by wearing Victorian style costumes and behaving how we would in a school in the Victorian times – that means no technology and working by candle light! Victorian classrooms were often very cold in the winter, so we tried to heat ourselves up with our (electric) candles.

We started off our Victorian Day at school with handwriting. We had to repeatedly write: ‘Children should be seen and not heard.’ (A very common saying in Victorian times!)

We then began our arithmetic work. We familiarised ourselves with the currency used in Victorian times and practised converting between the different units ( the currency included shillings, farthings, half-crowns and guineas!) It was rather confusing and we realised how relieved we are to have our own currency of pennies and pounds – much more straightforward!

After completing a dictation from Oliver Twist and reading the Bible, we moved onto something more fun: art! We created Christmas snowflake decorations by folding and cutting paper; a challenge we all very much enjoyed!

We were all very proud of our handcrafted decorations and can’t wait to decorate our homes with them!

It was a very fun and unique day! We learnt lots about Victorian life and all appreciate the luxuries we have in school nowadays!
