Our aim is to create real mathematicians with a lifelong love of maths!
Maths is a central core aspect of the curriculum and is taught daily. There is a real buzz about maths at Rosary School – children enjoy maths and have a positive attitude towards it. They can talk about their maths; they relish challenges and they see the purpose and importance of being mathematically fluent for school and later life.
We follow the aims and programmes of study of The National Curriculum and we teach with a Mastery approach to ensure all pupils acquire a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject.
We place a strong emphasis on reasoning and problem solving, combined with fluency in mathematics from EYFS to Year 6. All lessons will include daily fluency practise, such as quickfire number bonds or times table rehearsals, to ensure all children have a rapid recall of key facts which can be applied in areas of mathematics. We help our children build up their maths memory muscles through a variety of approaches including games, quizzes like The Summer Sizzle, daily speed grids and good old-fashioned chanting!
We teach maths using a variety of helpful sources including NCETM and White Rose. Teachers plan lessons according to daily marking and high-quality assessment for learning which allows us to teach as a whole class and group children fluidly according to their needs each day. We always use high quality concrete and pictorial representations to help children explore and demonstrate mathematical ideas. This enriches their learning experience and deepens their understanding at a conceptual level before moving on to the abstract.
