Art & Design

Art and Design at Rosary is about far more than making things look beautiful. It is a subject that nurtures imagination, builds resilience, develops fine motor skills and opens children's eyes to the rich diversity of human creativity across history and cultures. We want every child at Rosary to see themselves as an artist.

From EYFS to Year 6, children explore a wide range of media, materials and techniques — including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, collage and textile work. Each unit of work is carefully sequenced so that children build skills progressively, returning to key techniques and developing their mastery over time. Lessons introduce children to the work of significant artists, craftspeople and designers from a variety of cultures and periods, encouraging them to analyse, discuss and respond to a range of artistic styles.

Art at Rosary is closely connected to our wider curriculum. Children may study the intricate patterns of Islamic art alongside their learning in History, explore the natural world through observational drawing in Science, or respond creatively to texts they encounter in Literacy. This cross-curricular approach enriches both Art and the subjects it connects with, helping children make meaningful links in their learning.

We celebrate our children's artistic achievements through displays throughout the school that reflect the joy, skill and individuality of every pupil. Trips to local galleries and museums — with the cultural riches of London on our doorstep — bring learning to life and inspire children to see art everywhere they look.
