Spanish

At Rosary, we want our children to fall in love with language — to discover the pleasure of communicating in a new tongue, to develop an appreciation of other cultures and ways of life, and to lay the foundations for a lifetime of language learning. Spanish is our chosen modern foreign language, taught from Year 1 to Year 6.

Spanish is taught weekly by a specialist teacher with the skills and enthusiasm to bring the language to life. Children begin their language learning journey in Year 1 with basic vocabulary, greetings and songs, and steadily develop their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills as they move through the school. The curriculum is carefully sequenced so that knowledge and skills build progressively, with each year revisiting and extending prior learning.

Lessons are rich, lively and varied — incorporating games, songs, stories, role play and structured written tasks. Children learn to ask and answer questions, describe themselves and their world, and engage in simple conversations with growing confidence. Grammar is introduced in a systematic but accessible way, helping children to understand patterns in language that will support their learning of other languages in the future.

Our Spanish curriculum also celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the Spanish-speaking world, from Spain to Latin America and beyond. We want children to approach other cultures with curiosity, openness and respect — values that sit at the heart of our school community. Learning Spanish at Rosary is not just about language; it is about opening doors to the wider world.
